A Very Late Book Haul for July 2018

I have been having a difficult lately with life and I apologize for being scarce. A few things have come up, which led to a strange metamorphosis. It is a process so I need to take the time to follow through with what the pain is teaching me. In other words, excuse my late book haul for July 2018.

New Series

Science Fiction

I have a friend who loves this series called Thursday Next by J. Fforde. It’s a mystery series as well. I am thinking I’d like to read some mystery. Naturally, I picked up The Eyre Affair.  Gail Carriger and Mackenzie Lee wrote glowing reviews of this first book.

Alternate History

His Majesty’s Dragon by Naomi Novik is my first foray into alternate history (kind of). I did read some steampunk which is, arguably, a take on alternate history. This one, however, is less preoccupied with technology (I think) and more interested in dragons. I like dragons.

Garth Nix is going to appear in this post multiple times. Mister Monday is a book I wanted to read for a very long time. Having started it, I already am interested to continue with it. I have a good feeling about Garth Nix in general.

Kate Eliot’s Cold Magic is another book I picked up. It involves schools and magic. I don’t know too much about this book but I keep seeing it all over the place.

I just realized that my post does not have a rhyme or reason when it comes to organization. Don’t mind me.

Okay. So, I picked up Sabriel and its follow-up by Garth Nix. I don’t know if I’ll be too tired of Nix by the end of the month but I hear great things about this series. In college, I did read one of them (Clariel? Is that what it was called?). However, I have no memory of what that book was like.

Furthermore, I picked up another staple in the fantasy genre: Alanna and In the Hand of the Goddess by Tamora Pierce. They appear to be middle-grade level and I am hopeful.

Finally, I picked up a fantasy/middle-grade story: Fablehaven by Brandon Mull.

Self Help

I also found two Gretchen Rubin books that I am hoping will be illuminating as I try to work through some stuff.

  1. I… have not read any of the books you bought so have no thoughts to share! Though I had no idea Mister Monday was steampunk??? Why has no one ever told me this when everyone knows I love steampunk? Well, obviously not everyone, but still. I am Surprised by this.

I’ve actually been quite good at not buying any books recently. Though I did purchase Anger is a Gift earlier in the week because from what I’ve heard, I really need it in my life. It hasn’t been shipped yet, though, which is way too disappointing. I also backed the Kickstarter for Alice Oseman’s comic this morning, as well! As a Christmas gift to myself as it was quite expensive. I am promising myself I’m not gonna read it until Christmas. We’ll see how that goes.

I hope you are taking care of yourself, lovely one <3

    1. Ugh. I just wish I could communicate just how much your comments mean to me. You are an amazing person, Cee, and I am so, so thankful for your friendship.
