More NEWTs Cheating to Finish up August 2018

Look! An image for the post! It’s been a while. Image courtesy of Photo-MIX Company on Pixabay.

As erratic as my reading has been, I am still attempting to get some allotted reading space in my schedule. The good news is that last week was actually a decent week in terms of wrapping up books. I am hopeful! Here is the list of all the NEWTs’ Challenges.

Getting into the NEWTs.
Not Fully Cheating: An Explanation

Unlike my past attempts at participating in readathons, I did manage to follow through with some of my subject levels. I guess it depends on how picky we want to be (please don’t be picky. That’s usually my job).

Things I finished reading: ANCIENT RUNES, level–Acceptable (The Scandalous Sisterhood of Prickwillow Place by Julie Berry) and level Outstanding (The Palace Walk by Naguib Mahfouz).

My problem is that I didn’t read them in order. Hence, the cheating part of this post. Whoops. (To be honest and transparent, I really get nervous when I diverge from the communal rules of an event. Heck, I am always worried).

NEWTs Level to Complete My Ancient Runes Studies

Level to complete: NEWTs Level 2: Exceptional
NEWTs Prompt: Oldest Unread Book on Your Shelves

  • The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
    • It is satisfying the NEWTs’ essence of this subject, I think. It is the oldest book I have owned without ever reading. I hope I am grasping the prompt correctly.

NEWTs Levels to Complete Care for Magical Creatures Studies
  • NEWTs Level: Acceptable
    • Prompt: Book with an Animal on the Cover
      • The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater
        • Horses are on the cover. Perhaps I can then transition into the rest of the Wolves of Mercy Falls by the same author. This novel is a bit underrated. I am excited to have a fresh perspective as I read it for the first time.
  • NEWTs Level: Exceeds Expectations
    • Prompt: Book under 160 pages
      • My copy of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is 155 pages.  It’s my first Roald Dahl read. Funnily enough, I find Willy Wonka terrifying in the more recent adaptation of the novel. I haven’t seen the one with Gene Wilder.
  • NEWTs Level: Outstanding
    • Prompt: Book with dragons in any way
      • Here I am cheating again because I am currently reading Naomi Novik’s His Majesty’s Dragon.
Girl, you’re pushing your luck–I mean: NEWTs Levels to Complete Charms
  • NEWTs Level: Acceptable
    • Prompt: Book with Magic in it
      • Half-Bad by Sally Greene is among the ancient stories that I wanted to read so badly, but then shied away from reading it after hearing some ominous reviews.  I have remained dubious ever since. No more!
  • NEWTs Level: Exceeds Expectations
  • Prompt: Book with a Charming Cover

Listen. You get to vote here.

Which of these books is the prettiest?

These Broken Stars (Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff)
Days of Blood & Starlight (Laini Taylor)
The Star-Touched Queen (Roshani Chokshi)
  • NEWTs Level: Outstanding
    • Prompt: A Book you think will leave a mark
      • David Arnold’s Mosquitoland is what I am thinking of reading to satisfy this part of my NEWTs. My friend Misty is quite fond of this book. Let me tell you, Misty is one of those wise souls and she’s eclectic and clever. Ugh. I have awesome friends.

  1. I think a lot of people did that, read them a little bit out of order. I mean, it’s whatever -as long as you finish them, right? I think if you read A, E and O out of order but finished them all, who cares? I do think that if you finished only A and O, then your grade would be A. But really, who cares? It’s just a readathon for fun! 😀

How are you liking His Majesty’s Dragon? I’ve had that one on my shelf for ages and still haven’t read it…
